Russia has leveled accusations against the United States, claiming it has abandoned its role as an impartial mediator in the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the U.S. is escalating pressure on Russia through sanctions rather than acting as a neutral party in peace efforts. These comments surfaced following an agreement by G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to bolster measures targeting Russia’s economy, particularly its energy sector.

Since President Trump’s return to office in 2025, he has aimed to facilitate negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic efforts have reached an impasse, with Ukraine steadfastly rejecting Russian demands related to territorial concessions, military limitations, and restrictions on Western support. Lavrov’s remarks underscore the challenges facing diplomatic progress as the conflict continues.

In a separate statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized European nations for what he described as preparations for conflict with Russia. He pointed to increased military budgets and rearmament initiatives as evidence of Europe’s military expansion. Putin reiterated Russia’s stance that Ukraine should withdraw from the eastern Donbas region and claimed that Russian forces are nearing the capture of the strategic city of Kostiantynivka.

Putin also accused Ukraine and its Western allies of supporting attacks on Russian infrastructure, actions he says are intended to create instability within Russia. The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has resulted in significant human suffering, with hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions displaced. Despite ongoing international efforts, the prospects for a negotiated settlement remain uncertain.
