India is actively engaging with US authorities to address the impact of revised American visa regulations that could affect Indian students and academic visitors. According to Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, India is closely monitoring the situation. Jaiswal assured that the Indian government will continue to advocate for its citizens by raising concerns with Washington whenever necessary.
The recent changes, introduced by the US Department of Homeland Security, involve stricter residency rules for holders of F, J, and I category visas. These visas are typically issued to international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. The updated regulations now require non-immigrant visa holders in these categories to adhere to fixed periods of stay. This marks a shift from the previous system, which allowed individuals to remain in the United States for more extended durations without consistent federal oversight.
One significant alteration in the new framework is the reduction of the grace period for F visa holders after completing their studies. Students are now required to leave the country, transfer to another institution, or alter their immigration status within 30 days, down from the previous 60-day allowance.
While acknowledging that visa and immigration policies are matters of national sovereignty, Indian officials reiterated their dedication to assisting Indian citizens. They aim to minimize any difficulties caused by these updated US visa rules, ensuring that the interests of Indian nationals are safeguarded.
