Trump Featured on New $1 Coin, Says US Treasury

The U.S. Treasury Department has revealed that the U.S. Mint is now producing a new commemorative $1 coin that features former President Donald Trump. This initiative is part of the celebrations planned for the 250th anniversary of the United States. The coin is expected to be available to the public this fall, marking a notable addition to the nation’s historical memorabilia.

The design of the coin, which was approved earlier this year, has undergone some modifications. Notably, the final version includes a gold-colored finish instead of the originally planned solid gold. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that this coin aims to honor America’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism, reflecting the nation’s dedication to its core values and freedoms.

On one side, the coin showcases a portrait of Donald Trump alongside the word “LIBERTY,” and includes the dates “1776–2026” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, accompanied by the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” reinforcing the coin’s patriotic theme.

The announcement of this commemorative coin has sparked some controversy. Critics point out that federal law typically prohibits living presidents from being depicted on U.S. currency. However, Treasury officials have defended the decision, asserting that the Treasury Secretary has the authority to approve commemorative coin issues under specific circumstances.
