“Friend” or not, India is set to face a 25% tariff on its goods, plus an unspecified “penalty,” as US President Donald Trump targets the nation over its continued arms and energy purchases from Russia. The declaration, made on Truth Social, leaves no doubt about Washington’s displeasure with India’s geopolitical alignment amid the Ukraine war.

Trump articulated his criticisms clearly, pointing to a “massive” US trade deficit with India and lambasting India’s “far too high” tariffs and “strenuous and obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers. He explicitly linked India’s “vast” acquisitions of Russian military equipment and energy to undermining global efforts to halt the conflict in Ukraine.

The August 1 deadline for reaching trade agreements globally adds urgency to India’s predicament. While other key trading partners have managed to secure more lenient terms, India’s case highlights a direct correlation between its foreign policy choices and the economic repercussions imposed by the US.

With US goods trade with India at approximately $129.2 billion in 2024 and a $45.7 billion deficit, the new tariffs will undoubtedly impact bilateral commerce. This aggressive stance demonstrates Trump’s intent to use economic leverage to shape international behavior, particularly regarding the Ukraine crisis.
